Friday khutbah 10 Ramadan 1447 AH
Discerning Democracy
Ramadan is the month of reflection, of action, not one of rest or relaxation. It was during the month of Ramadan that Allah (swt) had ordered his Messenger (swt) to go forth, to spread the message of Islam, to speak out against injustice
Praise be to Allah (SWT) and Blessings on Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
[…] for they who do not judge in accordance with what Allah has bestowed from on high are, indeed, deniers of the [divinely revealed] truth! [Al Maida, 5:44]
[…] And they who do not judge in accordance with what Allah has revealed are, indeed, the evildoers! [Al Maida, 5:45]
[…] for they who do not judge in the light of what Allah has bestowed from on high, it is they, they who are truly degenerate [in their relationship with their Sustainer]! [Al Maida, 5:47]
Ramadan is the month of reflection, of action, not one of rest or relaxation. It was during the month of Ramadan that Allah (swt) had ordered his Messenger (swt) to go forth, to spread the message of Islam, to speak out against injustice and scourges of the jahiliyah society. Muhammad (saw) did not wait thirty days before actively engaging.
O you in [your comfortable] attire! Emerge [from your solitude] and warn [people of their deviancy]! [Mudathir, 74: 1-2]
These verses are also meant for us: Ramadan is not a month of rest. Allah (swt) does not manifest Himself for one month only. He (swt) is present year-round. We should not make the month of blessings be thus for the Executioner of Tel Aviv, we should not stop manifesting against the genocide, stop boycott, or stop denouncing war criminals.
This month of reflection should also motivate us to reflect on the jahiliyah society in which we are living. It is, by far, worse than that of the time of Rasulullah (SAW). We live in a time where the world is led by paedophiles, cannibals, and those who exploit young women for their carnal desires. It will not be wrong to state that the prevalence of immorality and decadence, as revealed by the Epstein Files, is directly related to the prevailing political system, which is democracy.
Democracy is a modern idol that some worship, which goes against the very essence of Islam. It contradicts the goal for which we have been created: submission and obedience to Allah’s (swt) laws. A system like democracy, which places human legislation over Allah’s (swt) law, has crossed its limits. Those who worship the conceptual idol of democracy, make it the source of law and supreme legislative authority. The indisputable heart of democracy is the right to legislate by Man for Man. It means attributing a right which belongs exclusively to Allah (swt), to the creation. It is a falsehood equal to shirk. Thus, human will and not Revelation be their supreme source for authority. Democracy places human will above Allah’s (swt) law and does not take His laws into account. If certain aspects of the latter correspond to the people’s desires or are relevant to the limits of the democratic constitution, they will be accepted, but not because of their divine origins.
Democracy legislates, protects, serves and punishes according to human rules, which is tantamount to kufr and shirk. The dangers of democracy are numerous. But let’s focus on the conflict with the very heart of our imaan (faith), for this is what counts for us.
What democrats deem immoral today could very well be legislated tomorrow. What is worshipped at one particular time can be denounced in another. What is legal today can become illegal tomorrow, and vice versa, for everything is of human origin. Human beings are limited and subject to prejudices. They are guided by desires, vested interests, power, riches and trendy social tendencies which constantly evolve.
When freedom is not within the limits of the Qur’an and Sunnah, the inevitable result is that of a corrupted nation. Only Allah (swt), the Creator, knows what suits His Creation. A system which does not follow Allah’s (swt) laws and guidance is one which will generate beings that are worse than animals, beings whose desires have replaced the commandments of their Creator. Allah (swt) has given us a glimpse of their true nature. He has unveiled their true faces: a group of rapists, paedophiles and children murderers.
Never in history have Muslims been massacred as they are today, when democracy reigns. Their ideology has shown its true face, it is based on violence. Muslims will remember that democracy has been written in the blood of the children of Gaza. And this is but one of the numerous massacres perpetuated in the era of democracy. Never has the earth known such a morally corrupt era as that of democracy.
The most surprising is what Allah (swt) has revealed to some people and entities. The extent of their filth is much deeper. What is truly surprising though is that some Muslims seem surprised. What did you expect? Do you believe that his suit and clean shave absolves him of any form of shirk, human law and desires? Haven’t you read the Qur’an? When the life, laws and habits of a person are guided by desires, how can the results be anything but corruption?
This applies for all those who have submitted to democracy, secularism, human laws and desires.
Have you not observed he who has styled his god out of his desires and whom Allah [there- upon] misled on the premise of [his false] knowledge, sealing his hearing and his heart, and placing an obfuscation over his vision? Who, then, can guide [such a person] after [he himself abandoned] Allah [the only one who has the capacity to guide]? Can you not have an awareness [of this type of misconduct]? [Jathiyah, 45:23]
How can we be surprised by their immorality when Allah (swt) has told us that those who are guided by desires are worse than cattle, whether in their private lives or within secular systems? Even worse are those who pretend to belong to this Ummah and abandon the perfect and magnificent system of Allah (swt) for a corrupted one. When freedom is separated from Allah (swt), a door to corruption opens. In Islam, freedom is guided. Islam liberates human beings from desires and influence from others. It is linked exclusively to Allah (swt), this is the real freedom. Freedom without Allah’s (swt) guidance and limits plunges Man into immorality. It drives him towards an existence that is worse than animals. We can observe that in democratic countries, secular countries and those who claim to be Muslims but follow them blindly.
When humans legislate, they destroy their own lives. They become slaves to their desires and not to Allah (swt). Under the yoke of secularism, desires persist, faith is corrupted, values erode, and ego takes over.
If Muslims have to draw a lesson from all that, it is to never be ashamed of Allah’s (swt) laws, for they guide humanity. They should be defended with conviction, without fear of hesitation, and should make us proud.
May Allah (SWT) help and guide us.
